I'm not sure if all dad's are the same, but mine is extremely sarcastic and stubborn!
So, Monday night at 10 pm I get a call from my Aunt (my dad's sister) she informs me that my dad (Gary) was getting ready to be trasnported to Des Moines by ambulance. Aunt Tonya explains to me that around 6 pm when my dad's wife Linda arrived home from work Dad asked her why he was standing at the kitchen sink peeling potatoes? Linda then asks dad what he had done all day, and he was clueless! Seriously folks, he couldn't remember anything that he had done basically all day. AND GET THIS...
-he drove to town and back visiting his mom and my aunt at their houses.
-he spent 4 hours taking out a fence on the side of his property.
-and he cruised around on his four wheeler.
So, Linda took him to the ER, there they ran a CT and everything seemed clear. However they took him through a number of other tests. One being they asked him who the President of the USA was and he had no clue? So, at 10 pm they decided to move him onto Des Moines. You have to understand that the Bloomfield hospital doesn't have alot of high tech. equipment. At this point I was trying to get in touch with Libby (my sister) who doesn't have a home phone, and had her cell turned on vibrate in her purse. See where this is going?
Anyway... 20 min. later her mother in law was standing at her beside telling her to call me that something was going on with our dad!
So, after finally getting hold of her, I inform her of what's going on and she is unbelievable calm about the whole situation. We then decide that we both would head to Des Moines Tuesday.
We both headed out around 7 am arrived in Des Moines and basically sat around all day. We did get to spend some quality time with our dad while waiting around. Before the doctor came in around 12:30 pm there were a gazillion things going through our head about what happend to dad. Stroke, Anyrsium ??? you name it. Both Libby and I when visiting with dad didn't see any signs or symptoms of anything unusual? In fact I thought he was completely fine since he was razzing me about the upcoming election. The two of us are clearly voting for two different people and therefore my dad needs to continually be a smart ass about why my candidate is not the right one. Anyway... 12:30 rolls around the doctor appears, asks dad a ton of questions and announces that he believes this to be TRANSITIONAL GLOBAL AMNESIA that is if the MRI comes back clear. So he explained this to us, that this is something that he sees maybe twice a year. The reoccurance is a mre 10% and their are no after effects. Causes could be stress, overexhurstion, and maybe deyhdration. (Pulling out fence and not drinking enough water, ya think dad!) It can last between 5 and 12 hours where the individual completely looses their memory. AMAZING, I have never heard of such a thing? We basically told dad that its a case of CRS (Can't Remember Shit) and he had to laugh! So around 5 pm yesterday afternoon he was released from the hospital and we were all on our way home.
You might be wondering why I'm blogging about this, but I wanted to inform you that if you or a family member have any memroy issues to take note and go to Mayo clinics web site. They have great information.
All is well. I talked to my dad today and he was 110% back to his normal self!
